Our Guide-In-Training Program

The Northern Lakes Canoe Base (NLCB) has a long tradition of fostering leadership through our Guide-In-Training (GIT) Program. GITs join our staff in leading fun and rewarding Girl Scout canoe trips, as well as packing food and equipment, cleaning and maintaining our canoe base, and helping our participants get the most out of their adventure. Even if a GIT does not return as a guide, this experience builds character, confidence, and courage.

GITs are 16-17 years old. A GIT may choose to come for one or two summers. Summers are broken into two sessions of about 3-4 weeks each. We like to coordinate GIT travel to and from the canoe base with guide arrivals and departures, or with our Destinations participants' travel to and from Duluth. GITs are supervised by staff at all times.

Successful applicants to our GIT program bring enthusiasm, willingness to work as team members, genuine interest in others, and an appreciation of how a Girl Scout canoe trip can make a positive impact. Dedicated GITs become excellent candidates for canoe guides! And guides demonstrate a suite of skills that are readily applied across a variety of career fields.

GITs are critical to the success of the canoe base program, and we are so grateful for their energy and their hard work! They pay a modest participation fee each summer, and arrange travel to and from the Duluth airport. Please contact us to apply, or coordinate travel and other details: GIT@nlcbaa.org.
